The discrete element method (DEM) is the most intricate method for direct numerical simulations of granular systems, based on contact models and Newton’s laws. During my PhD, I conducted extensive DEM simulations of various sand-fiber/geomembrane mixtures to reveal the reinforcement mechanisms for wrapped/layered granular soils and investigate the effect of inclusion geometry. In my first postdoc project, I obtained the dispersion relations for elastic waves in dry granular soils using the DEM (micro-parameters calibrated by Bayesian inference) and their variation over an oedometric stress path.
