We are looking for two self-motivated PhD students to work on two interconnected projects on "noise and vibration in wet soil" and "climate resilient geomaterials", in the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Twente. The projects (funded by the Dutch "Sectorplan Techniek") aim to address the grand challenges of climate adaptation by developing fundamental understandings about the natural/built environment (e.g., dikes and farms). We will look closely at the effects of drought/heat cycles on natural soils, with a special focus on the local context of East Netherlands. Understanding and mitigating the damages of these extreme climate conditions (e.g., dry-wetting) on the environ-geomechanical integrity of natural soils requires innovative, multidisciplinary approaches.
We will develop a quantitative, multi-scale understanding of soil mechanics and its interaction with hydro/vegetation-dynamics (both worldwide-recognized excellences of the University of Twente) for the natural and built environment. Such an improved understanding can inspire new design, construction, and ground improvement technologies to mitigate potential risks to the infrastructure (related to safety), nature (related to climate resilience), and society (related to agricultural production).
Please note that the vacancies is only open to female scientists. This is part of the University of Twente’s strategy to increase the proportion of women among its faculty and to create a working environment that is diverse and inclusive and supportive of excellence in research and teaching.
Deadline is 20 January 2021. For more information about the positions click the links below.
